about

Waayaha Cusub are a Somali musical collective led by singer Falis Abdi. In 2013, the ensemble organized the Reconciliation Music Festival in Mogadishu, the first international music festival to be held in Somalia's capital since the start of the civil war in the early 1990s. The militant group al-Shabab ruled Mogadishu from 2006 until 2011 and during this time no lyrical stanzas were allowed in al-Shabab-controlled areas. Two years ago Waayaha Cusub were threatened after producing a song disparaging the militants’ rule and its penchant for killing civilians.

During the Reconciliation Music Festival Waayaha Cusub member Shine Akhivar told the crowd “We want to change the world’s impression toward Mogadishu as a dangerous city, Mogadishu is more peaceful than many cities considered peaceful. Through music, we are committed to fight extremism.”
